CASTELS IN LOIRE ATLANTIQUE
The Loire Atlantique region is full of architectural marvels, not least its many châteaux. These magnificent sites offer a roof over your head to keep out the rain while you discover the heritage of the Loire.
Among the best known is the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, right in the heart of Nantes. An emblematic site of the city, located in the medieval quarter, the château can be visited and is also home to the Nantes history museum.
We also recommend the Château de Goulaine, to the south-east of Nantes, which has been a listed historic monument since 1913. It is the first "Château de la Loire" and one of the most remarkable historic monuments in Loire Atlantique.
Finally, just a few kilometres from our Les Brillas campsite, discover the Château de Pornic! A jewel in the crown of the town of Pornic, the château is a must-see. Guided tours are organised all year round, so don't miss out.
This short list is obviously not exhaustive. There are plenty of other castels to discover in the Loire Atlantique, in good weather and bad!
MUSEUMS IN LOIRE ATLANTIQUE
Rainy weather doesn't always mean boredom! Take advantage of the fickle weather to visit a museum and learn something new. In Loire Atlantique, there's no shortage of museums to choose from, offering a wide range of visits.
You'll find plenty of museums in Nantes, the department's capital. We recommend the two most famous: the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, where you can learn all about zoology, botany, earth sciences and the universe; and the Musée d'Arts de Nantes, which will take you on a journey through all kinds of artistic practices.
Further inland, learn more about the region's vineyards at the Musée du Vignoble Nantais. And on the Atlantic coast, visit the Musée des Marais Salants to find out all about the famous Guérande salt, and take home some local specialities!
